A Financial Guide for Social Entrepreneurs

Livre

This book provides what it promises to the reader, i.e. A financial guide for social entrepreneurs. It departs from the challenges that social entrepreneurs face to fund their ventures. We discuss three main challenges in this context:

  1. Access to funding;
  2. Complexity of business models;
  3. Predominant focus on social impact.

This book offers an overview of the different funding possibilities while presenting the main funding actors in Belgium as an illustration. Yet, we think that more is needed to survive the financial wilderness of social entrepreneurship. Therefore, we advise attention to a solid business model, supportive ecosystem, impact measurement and effective communication. The illustrative case studies and the presentation of ecosystem actors that can provide support to social entrepreneurs make this book a quite practical guide. All cases and ecosystem actors presented here come from the Belgian context, which is what we know best. We are confident that this Belgian view can inspire the international community as well. This book could be useful to social entrepreneurs, impact investors, universities, vocational training centers, corporates supporting social entrepreneurs, social impact incubators and accelerators, policymakers or everyone who wants to help a social enterprise in their journey. And please enjoy reading, our societies need more social entrepreneurship!

Microbiological guidelines

Livre

Microbiological Guidelines: Support for Interpretation of Microbiological Test Results of Foods.

Food should be tasty, healthy, sustainable and preferably not too expensive. But food should also be safe and with sufficient guarantees on maintaining good quality aspects until the end-of-shelf life. The various actors in the food supply chain have an interest in verifying the expected quality and safety by means of microbiological analyses of food. Measurement brings knowledge and microbiological guidelines help in the decision-making process for judging the acceptability of food or food production processes. The present handbook provides microbiological guidelines and current applicable EU legal criteria (status 1.1.2018) for a wide range of food categories (dairy, meat, seafoods, plant-based foods, bakery products, composite foods, shelf-stable food, water) and subcategories therein, based upon the type of food processing and intrinsic characteristics of the foods. This book can be consulted to provide quick answers on the expected microbiological contamination of foodstuff. It can help in interpretation of test results in assessing good (hygienic) practices in the production of food, determining the shelf life and ensuring food safety. The handbook also presents definitions of the wide variety of foodstuffs available and some reflections on, in particular, food safety issues or the on-going debate for some food items in assessing microbial quality. Furthermore, dedicated chapters deal with basic information on the various microbial parameters useful in testing of foods, sampling is discussed, and the set-up of challenge testing as a tool to assess food safety is elaborated upon.

Contracts in the People's Republic of China

Livre

This in-depth introduction to the law of contracts of Mainland China was written for Western lawyers who have contacts with the People's Republic of China, for scholars and students of comparative law or of Sinology. As stated above the book is merely an introduction, not a technical legal treatise for specialised private lawyers. It is therefore useful for businessmen too.

Without using stale language, this work also places the law of contractual obligations in an historical and socio-political context. It sketches, besides the general theory of contractual obligations and the provisions on the several specific contracts, the Chinese case law on international sales contracts, as well as the law on the dispute resolution. It can be said that with regard to the private law the book opens a window on the continental Chinese legal culture, as Zweigert and Kötz would call it.

THE NEW ARBITRATION LAW

Livre

As the Belgian Arbitration Act of 24 June 2013 entered into force on 1
September 2013, it seemed appropriate to celebrate the second anniversary of
this progressive and modern piece of legislation with a book. This volume is the
result of an excellent cooperation of the Institute of Private International Law of
KU Leuven and Cepani.

Dispute resolution of all types, raises issues of choice of law and choice of
‘court’ or venue. Parties have to ascertain lex arbitri (the law of the arbitration
agreement); the curial law (the procedural law which will guide the arbitration
proceedings, despite the latin curia not commonly referred to as lex curia); and
the ‘proper law’, the law that governs the actual contract (lex causae. In the
case of contractual arrangements, the lex contractus). Current volume reviews
important aspects of Belgian law as the curial law. It is a welcome contribution
to scholarship, which the Institute of Private International law was most happy
to contribute to.

In addition, this volume is welcomed by the arbitration community. Following
the introduction of a completely revised Part VI of the Belgian Judicial Code,
an in-depth analysis with regard to its wording, structure and underlying
mechanisms is required in order to facilitate its correct application. This
volume serves exactly that purpose. Renowned Belgian arbitration practitioners
and scholars – some of whom were members of the 2008 Working Group that
drafted the new law – have contributed and shared their views, insights and
experience, covering all aspects of the new arbitration law. Therefore, CEPANI
is grateful that the Institute of Private International Law facilitated the come
into being of this book.

INTROD.TO INTERN.COMM.LAW

Livre

This book covers the most important legal issues when conducting business abroad.

The first part covers European law with a focus on the institutions of the European Union, the four freedoms and competition law.

The second part focuses on individual international contracts. This part starts with the legal environment of the business transaction. The political and policy risks of doing business abroad are explained, as well as how they should be addressed. It continues with entry strategies in foreign markets and then goes on to focus on the individual contract of sale. A wide range of subjects are covered, including general conditions of sale, retention of title, the CISG, product safety and product liability, Incoterms, contract of carriage, jurisdiction, choice of law and arbitration, standard contract clauses and payment conditions.

This book takes a practical approach and contains examples and exercises. The book does not pretend to be the ultimate guide: the field of international commercial law in particular is vast, and has many different angels. However, it does try to explain the main pitfalls of doing business in foreign countries and how to avoid them.

The Active Welfare State Revisited

Livre

Lisez ici l'interview paru dans Le Soir du 22 juin 2013

This essay revisits social policy developments in Belgium in the decade 2000-2010 on the basis of stylized facts with regard to spending, employment, the social policy case load, dependency rates and poverty. With regard to spending it focuses on the long-term evolution in Belgian public social spending and the extent to which the observed spending pattern accommodated the perceived emergence of new social risks. By means of 'budgetary effort indicators', the analysis disentangles the impact of demographic evolutions from deliberate shifts in broad policy priorities. In addition, it addresses some critical points in the performance of the Belgian welfare state, such as the rising number of children at risk of poverty, the need to anticipate long-term demographic ageing, and (briefly) the need for structural changes in parts of the health care system. The analysis shows that preparing a next wave of social reform is imperative.

Author
Frank Vandenbroucke is professor at KU Leuven (95 %) and also teaches Social Economic Analysis in the interdisciplinary degree programme Social and Economic Sciences at Antwerp University. Frank Vandenbroucke does research on social developments in EU member states, such as participation in the labour market, income development and distribution, education, active ageing, social protection, etc. These themes are strongly related to his Phd. on social justice that he obtained in 1999 at Oxford University. He conducts his research in close interdisciplinary cooperation with researchers from various faculties in Human Sciences at KU Leuven. Research on the social developments in Europe and the role of the European Union is important, says Frank Vandenbroucke: "For quite some time European integration has influenced social developments in the member states. But there is more. The European Union will not get out of the current crisis if its members are not able to set out a common course, also in the social field. How that will take place exactly is not certain, and is partly unexplored terrain and will be the subject of quite some debate in the years to come."

Herman Deleeck Centre for Social Policy - University of Antwerp
The Herman Deleeck Centre for Social Policy and the University of Antwerp established the Herman Deleeck Chair in 2012 at the occasion of the Centre's fortieth anniversary and in commemoration of the passing away of prof. Deleeck ten years ago.
Herman Deleeck committed his entire career to convincing the research community, policy makers and the public at large of the import ance of equality of opportunity and social redistribution through the welfare state's institutions. In the same tradition, the Chair aims to offer a platform to renowned experts in social policy to share their expertise and ideas.
Frank Vandenbroucke is the first holder of the Herman Deleeck Chair.
