Kris Bernauw has a lic. juris (UGent 1981), lic. crim. (UGent 1981) and lic.not; (1982 Central State Examination Board), LLM in Air and Space Law (1986 McGill University Montreal - Canada), PhD (UGent 1996).
He holds a commercial pilot's license with multi-engine and instrument flight ratings. He serves as a reserve-officer (rank: lieutenant colonel) with para and commando certificates in the Belgian Air Force. He was invited as a visiting professor to teach transport and insurance law at the Universities of Kigali (Rwanda 1987-1994), Le Havre (France 1998 and 2003), Dresden (Germany 2003), and Mekelle (Ethiopia 2006). After serving as a research and teaching assistant at UGent (1987-1997), he was appointed professor of law at Ghent University (1997) and University of Antwerp (2006) for the courses in the field of transport and insurance law.
Since 2005 he serves as a substitute judge in the Court of Appeals of Ghent. Since 1996 he performs missions as an expert-consultant for the World Bank, the EU Commission and other international organisations in Central and South-East Asia and in West-Africa. Since 1981 he practices law as a solicitor at the Bar of Ghent and was also a trainee lawyer at the Bar of Montreal (Canada 1986).
